'On Courage' (from the Courage Amplifier)
Fear is an innate response that has been essential to our survival as human beings. Throughout the million-year history of human evolution, cautiousness and proneness to anxiety have been highly adaptive traits when it comes to survival. For example, let's say you have two cavemen, Grok and Grak. They both pass a bush of berries; Grok tries some, but Grak refrains. Then they pass by a cave. Grok goes in to explore, but Grak stays outside. Although Grok is clearly more fun to have around, he is exposing himself to more danger than Grak is, and as a result it's more likely that he will perish from a dose of poison berries or a bear attack before he passes his genes to the next generation. This is how evolution selects for cautiousness.
Modern humans live in environments that are substantially more risk-free compared to the ones we evolved in hundreds of thousands of years ago. Our food is inspected for us for safety, wild animals do not attack us in our habitats, and we are well-protected from the elements. However, from the previous example, it's easy to extrapolate why modern human beings are so predisposed to fear, even in the absence of substantial threats. Our physiology is wired for survival, and as such, fear-based responses generally trump ones based on pleasure. As Professor Jonathan Haidt says in his new book, "The Happiness Hypothesis", "Responses to threats and unpleasantness are faster, stronger, and harder to inhibit than responses to opportunities and pleasures."
This division between responses to threats vs responses to opportunities and pleasures roughly corresponds to the division of the autonomic nervous system between the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems. As its name implies, the autonomic nervous system is the automatic part of our nervous system that is chiefly responsible for our survival functions, popularly known as the 'four Fs' -- fighting, fleeing, feeding and mating. The sympathetic nervous system is sometimes called the 'fight or flight' response, and the parasympathetic the 'rest and ruminate' response.
If we were to compare the two branches of the autonomic nervous system, we'd see that the sympathetic is instantaneous, automatic, goes everywhere in the body, and has no off switch. The parasympathetic also goes everywhere, but it is not as automatic, it needs to be turned on deliberately, it can be turned off, and is 10-20x slower than the sympathetic system. This makes sense: if the saber-toothed cat shows up, you want to have an immediate dose of adrenaline ready to make blood and nutrients available to your legs and intensify your breathing so you can flee. Once you're in a safe place, there's plenty of time for the parasympathetic system to kick in to help you wind down; there's no pressure to make that work as urgently.
This has to do with the way our brain is wired. Most sensory data passes through the amygdala, which controls our fight-or-flight response, before it ever gets to the cerebral cortex. As such, we're often reacting to a fearful stimulus long before we even know what that fearful stimulus is.
In modern times, genuine occasions for fear are few and far between -- so much so that there is a thriving industry in artificially-induced fear, from roller coasters to horror movies. It's been said that we are born with only three innate fears: those of loud noises, falling and snakes. The rest are all learned. Some of these fears are highly adaptive: fear of oncoming vehicles keeps us from stepping off a curb onto the path of an 18-wheeler. However, if we were to catalog the number of times that we feel fear, we'd see that a very small fraction of those instances have anything to do with a real, physical threat -- in other words, constituting a genuine adaptive response. Some instances of fear that you may have experienced recently: fear of being late to work; of not finding a parking spot; of getting a stain on white clothing; of missing a deadline; of being turned down for a date; of a date not going well once it's started; of criticism from your boss or parents; of an exam not going well; of getting a speeding ticket; of people talking behind your back; of being found unattractive; of a joke not getting any laughs; of a girl refusing your kiss at the end of a night.
There are two things I'd like to notice about this list. First of all, none of these events are actually life-threatening in the same way that, say, getting mauled by a bear could be. Second, in almost none of them does your sympathetic response actually improve your performance of the task at hand. Scientists have shown that mild anxiety can improve performance in some instances -- e.g. a 100-meter dash, a musical performance, or even an exam -- but for the most part, a full-blown autonomic response is not adaptive in most of these circumstances. These are classic instances of what the Taoists would call getting in your own way.
The ancient Eastern masters from various traditions -- Taoist, Buddhist, Hindu, Zen, Sufi and many others -- recognized this feature of the human nervous system, and so found antidotes to it. These were awareness and equanimity. They cultivated a calm temperament through meditation and breathing exercises, which you can think of as strengthening the parasympathetic response. As a result, the Eastern masters were able to develop a very strong and nearly imperturbable presence. Because they were not getting in their own way, in the face of danger they were pure action, maximally effective. This cultivation fed into a hyper-aware state of mind, which, interestingly enough, seems to block out emotion-based responses. In fact, the following exercise will demonstrate that. Exercise 1: Clearing the mind and cultivating awareness Stretch your arms out in front of you with your index fingers pointing up and about 6 inches away from one another. Focus your eyesight on a point in between the two fingers and far in the distance. Now, while still looking straight ahead, take your fingers and slowly bring them out to the sides, as far as they will go, and up, just above eye level, all the while maintaining your visual attention on them in your peripheral vision. So now you have three points of attention in your visual field: focusing straight ahead, while maintaining attention on the fingers in the upper left and right corners of your visual field. Notice as you do this that it becomes nearly impossible to think about anything, or to feel any kind of negative emotion. Use this exercise regularly to clear and calm the mind. Calm as the cornerstone of courage Ernest Hemingway once said that 'Courage is grace under pressure'. We are all born with innate courage; however, because of the way we are wired, it is a skill that needs to be unmasked and cultivated. The main prerequisite for courage is a calm, imperturbable mind. A calm mind allows you to think decisions through and then respond in the most effective manner instead of getting in your own way by reacting emotionally to a situation. The best way to cultivate a powerfully calm and aware mindset is to engage in some practice of mindfulness regularly. To this end, I recommend two means: yoga and meditation. Yoga, especially the very vigorous forms of hatha yoga, cultivate a strong, calm center that develops over time into a serene yet responsive mindset. When practiced regularly, it also gives you a lithe, strong and flexible physique. To get noticeable benefits out of yoga, I recommend three 1.5 hour sessions a week, with two sessions per week being the lower limit for deriving tangible benefit.
Meditation has many forms and advocates. In its simplest form, it is a focusing of your attention on something of your choosing while clearing the mind of all other thoughts. Sometimes a mantra, a repeated phrase, helps to cement in the meditative mindset. In the next exercise, I describe an advanced and very effective meditation technique derived from kriya yoga -- the Hong-Sau technique. Exercise 2. The Hong-Sau meditation Sit on the floor or on a chair, with your back straight and your hands on your lap. Do not do this meditation while lying down; it is important to have the spinal column vertical. Now close your eyes and focus your attention on the space between your eyebrows. Notice how doing that creates a shift in the feeling tone of your mind. Now, in your head, without saying it out loud, with each inhalation, say the syllable 'hong'; with each exhalation, say the syallable 'sau' (pronounced like 'saw'). Continue to do this for 15 minutes at first. Then, when you have gotten better at the technique, do it for 30 minutes. For maximum benefit, it is recommended to meditate daily, so set
aside a time, ideally right after you wake up, to do the Hong-Sau meditation. If you can't do it daily at first, do it 3 times a week, then 5 times a week, then every day. And if you want to get serious about it and do it the way the kriya masters recommend, do the meditation once in the morning and once in the evening.
The people who have a daily meditation practice say that it's the most important thing they do every day. The best way to find out why is simply to do it for yourself and experience the benefits firsthand.
Meditation builds the foundation for the calm mindset which forms the cornerstone of courage. This is because once you cultivate the calm mindfulness, you diminish the distracting power of emotion-based responses, acting instead upon instinct and intuition. One of the best ways to think about courage comes from the Taoism-based martial art of Wing Chun. The first of four fighting principles of Wing Chun says, 'when the way is clear, move forward.' This principle is applicable to all aspects of life, but since this article is about dating, let's see how it applies to that. For example, let's assume you're on a date with a woman, and you're wondering when to kiss her for the first time. There will be a moment at which it will be appropriate for you to kiss her, and the more relaxed you are in yourself, the more centered you are, the more likely you are to seize that moment. You will sense the moment because of intuition; you will act upon it based on instinct. Because of your meditative practice, the clouding influence of fear will be nowhere in sight. Instead, you will have courage. Courage is the seizing of that moment, and because you have done your homework, you will have it in plentiful supply at the moment you need it.
In dating, as in life in general, there are many turning points, and as the man, it is chiefly your responsibility to make those transitions successfully. Effectively none of them involve a threat of physical harm, for which the sympathetic nervous system was originally designed. By developing your courage, you will be in a position to grasp opportunity as it arises before you, acting the same way you would if you saw a hundred-dollar bill on the ground: all action, no hesitation. When the way is clear, move forward. This is the way of the Tao. HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Here's a crazy idea:
If you want a normal girl, be HONEST! Tell them you already did all
the things you've done. You sowed your wild oats and got it all out of
your system. You discovered it wasn't fulfilling for you. You could
have any of them you want. But, you're not interested in those kinds
of girls anymore (OPTIONAL: and in fact are totally turned-off at the
very thought of them).
Then start a qualifying list saying you're looking for a real woman
who _____, _____, _____. Where the blanks are the things a woman
you've now attracted will try to qualify for and prove that she has or
can live up.
IE. This is off the top of my head. But, the conversation may go
something like...
I really love waking up the deeper woman inside. The woman inside you
that WANTS to wake up and feel all of the amazing things a woman is
capable of feeling...(etc, etc)
So, I'm really only interested in the kind of woman who would inspire
me to wake her up in that way.
A woman who has a strong enough sense of self... and knows what she
has going for her... such that you and I BOTH know that you don't need
to worry about any of those Sauna girls because you're already
satisfying me in all the right ways purely by being the kind of woman
you've now awakened into."
This isn't a memorize and go use version yet. Cuz I just typed the
general concept. But, maybe trying something like that would do the
trick for ya.

Identity is not the job you do...it's who you are at the core. You're not your f'n khakis! Your hopes, dreams, ambitions, and future plans are what make up your identity. Who YOU are is more important to girls than your day job. If a girl asks you "What do you do?" and you give her your resume - she won't know anything about YOU. This is a question that will always come up, so be prepared. Talking about your boring job will only bore the both of you, so cut that right out. What's most important is that you're passionate about who you've chosen to be in this short life. Fight Club would be a prime example, it's about a guy who realizes that he has no identity and doesn't know what to do about it. His subconscious creates an identity to act out all the things he wants to do but was afraid of attempting for lack of self-confidence. I'm sure you know the story, but anyways, you're different and interested in working towards your goals. I've noticed that MM doesn't try to force the fact that they have some sort of magic pill to fix your love life, they tell you how to improve yourself and create your own magic. This CD is another important piece in your overall framework. It's going to help you display your value in an interesting way and make more intimate connections. The "flash game" has to end at some point and this is where most girls will make up their mind on how well they want to know you. Grounding your identity to theirs is just the icing on the cake. You shouldn't miss this one, especially if you have flake issues or trouble creating rapport.
Not a lot to say about this CD, I'm sure most guys know how important the concept of identity is, as well as the knowing proper grounding. I got a huge amount of info out of this one and the conversation flowed smoothly, making it all simple and easy to listen to. It would have been great if it were even longer, but then again, I just can never get enough of this stuff, so maybe that's just me. For good measure, there's a couple of accomplishment intro's towards the end and it's nice to hear how that is done properly.

I had an "a-ha!" moment the other day that I thought I would share with you guys.
I recently have been enjoying the company of a few women, and I was lining up one to see again on Friday night. She's young, and just out of a relationship. TRANSLATION: She's a walking bag of cRaZy just waiting to happen.
Occasionally I will text her and do the "flirt" thing with her. All last week she was all a-glow with attraction. I figured it was time to get together with her again and finish what we'd started the week before.
So I sent her a message on Thursday night that said simply "Let's get together tomorrow night after you're done at work..." I needed to find out if she was available or not so I could plan things out for the weekend.
Her response came back, "Sounds like fun! See you ..."
Well, that was less than her flirtatious self, which led me to think "She's going to flake." I can sense an impeding flake with about a 95% accuracy these days.
Sure enough, she did.
Now, I've been in this game for a LONG time, and it didn't phase me, and I knew that any reaction was a BAD reaction.
But for the first time, I had an epiphany as to WHY it is that women need to see NO reaction from you on this kind of behavior.
It's like this: We all know that to 'call her on her shit' is a bad, bad, bad way to handle flaking. You send the message that you're an inflexible dork who will NOT be fun. Sometimes, when a guy is just getting his self-dignity and self-respect up to Alpha Man level, he thinks that he needs to 'set her straight' or 'let her know where he stands.'
Usually, this is not good. Especially for most younger women who are (as I like to say) flakier than day-old croissants.
But consider what she really interprets from your reaction: If you react to her flaking with anything more than an "I didn't even notice you flaked" reaction, than you are telling her:
A) You lack emotional maturity, since you can't handle disappointment or changes in your rigid, structured little life. TRANSLATION: You're about as fun as a stick in the eye.
B) You must not go through this experience of being flaked on very much or you would have figured it out by now. What, this is the first time you've been flaked on? Get over it. TRANSLATION: You're a loser.
C) If you HAVE been flaked on before and STILL react this way, it tells her that insecure anger is where you react from, and she knows what THAT means about you. (I don't need to translate this one, do I?)
After all, what kind of guy isn't even phased by a woman flaking on him?
ANSWER: A man who has other options in his life.
Guys, until she's begging you to be her one-and-only, there is NO woman that is THAT big of a concern to you. If she is, you've lost focus and perspective.
A man will only make a woman this important to him when his own life lacks direction, power, and fun. She's not here to give you a purpose; she's here to support and go where you're already headed.
Some guys incorrectly assume that women need to understand that you are the type of guy that no woman would DARE flake on because he's so "high value."
Or they think "If I let her get away with this, I'll be communicating my lack of value or low social status..."
Sorry, dude. Dead WRONG.
She knows that EVERY girl on the planet has flaked on a guy, and EVERY guy in the world has been flaked on. It's like when you woke up this morning with wood. It's just a fact of life.
If a woman flakes constantly AFTER you've had a chance to demonstrate your Alpha Bad-ass self, then you've got only one problem to consider: Stable, sane women do NOT flake on men they genuinely WANT to see again.
So if she continues to flake ... that's not the problem. What you need to know is why didn't she want to experience you again?
So here's my approach:
1) Recognize that it's in a woman's nature to flake. It's not personal, so again, get over it.
Rain gets you wet. Dogs bark. Women flake.
Getting angry about this is neurotic and pointless. Accept it and move on.
2) Always stack your possibilities. If one falls through, you can't be wasting time getting indignant and angry over something that really doesn't impact you. It's a typical newbie mistake to load up far too much meaning on any particular incident of flake-age, and that's why they tend to keep asking this question about "what do I do when she flakes?"
YOU DON'T CARE, that's what you do.
3) Never let a woman think you will be anything less than FUN. Her fun is more important initially to her than any belief in your 'value.'
In fact, the amount of fun you give her is - to a large degree - what she equates as your 'value.'
Read that again.
And never forget this fact. EVER. Fun for women is one of the most overlooked aspects of building at traction with women, and one of the most under-developed abilities in most men. (I'll cover this in the future in more detail...)
From now on, repeat after me: "She flaked? Wow, I didn't even notice..."
PS: I just got a text from that girl in the course of writing this article. She apologized and is back to asking about a second chance. Do you think this would have happened if I'd shown any reaction to her flake? Uh, not likely.

New Dating/Seduction Seminars & Workshop in Montreal by DOC!
Doc, who many of you know from his great interview here last time and all too rare but outstanding posts on this list, on Mystery's Lounge, and the Montreal Lair, is bringing his seminars and speed dating events to Montreal. Previously they were mainly held in Toronto as part of the Learning Annex, Doc is now setting it up here and plans to hold events on a monthly basis.

The events are Dating Secrets for Women, a 3 Hour seminar (cost $50) and Dating Secrets for Guys; a Guide to The Art of Dating (also 3 hours and $50). The fall calendar has a full weekend seminar and makeover. He also has 3 new books coming out this fall under the SETNA Dating Manual Series. Volume I (to be released this week) deals with the psychology of attraction, first impressions, and working on your inner game, Volume II (coming in September) deals with tactics and strategies to go from meeting her to dating her, and Volume III will deal with Managing Relationships.
Full-weekend Dating Makeover workshops will be offered soon (including a half day with a personal stylist, video tape analysis of body language, and live practice sessions with dating coaches beautiful women who will give the guys on the spot feedback on how they come across and what to improve). If you are opening groups (or sets: 2-sets, 3-sets, mixed sets, etc) of people with the 3 second rule by stacking indirect openers (including false opinion openers), false time constraining (discovered by Style), demonstrating a higher value to your romantic interest’s peer group with high octane DHVs while she obliquely observes (locking her into her own set with a prop), and simultaneously performing false disqualifiers (which include negs) on her with the intension of disarming her peergroup and then isolating her to rebuild her self-esteem once you have enough IOIs (indicators of interest) so you may share in a comfort and trust building effort and then build in a jealousy subplot to solidify her attraction for you, you are using The Mystery Method.
If instead you are only approaching women who are alone, you are greatly limiting your options and quite likely alienating your target's friends.
