Friday, December 4th, 2004...
Why is that date so important? Because it was the day I downloaded David DeAngelo's original eBook (doubleyourdating.com/), and realized that 30 years of intractable depression was finally coming to an end.
I KNEW I had serious behavioral and emotional issues to tend to... I just didn't know where to start. Telling me to simply "have confidence" was like telling a kindergartener to just "use advanced calculus".
I grew up with a highly educated but extremely timid and boring father who was definitely "old school". He grew up during the Depression, met and married an uneducated Third World immigrant from Cuba in the mid 1950s, and settled down in southeastern Pennsylvania. She was the light of his life; very attractive and he figured she would polish up real good. So he thought...
In the late 1960s, shortly after I was born, Mom came down with a paranoid form of schizophrenia, and that's where things began to fall apart.
I have 2 older brothers, the oldest from my mom's previous marriage. He was already married and out of the house before I was cognizant of my surroundings, so he was like the good friend that would visit from Philadelphia every once in a while. My other brother had me by eight years, and we never discussed my mom's "issues". She was the elephant leering in the corner; we hung our clothes on it and basically did our best to ignore what was going on. My older brother knew my dad was shovelling all his resources into a black hole on Mom; I was too young yet to understand what was happening. As the Seventies melted into the Eighties, my mom's condition grew progressively worse, she completely decompensated. It was like watching something out of Tales From the Crypt; she gained about 80 pounds, her teeth all fell out from lack of hygiene, she let the household chores go, and my dad continually accepted this from her and kept on trying to rescue her. She would have extended stays in mental institutions, was severely medicated and would sleep 20 hours a day.
I was always the focal point of a lot of abuse from my peer group because of my mom and her slatternliness. I was one of those hyperactive kids on Ritalin back in the 70s, weighed 160 pounds at age 10 with a 42 inch waist, and craved social acceptance like a drug. I ate to medicate and would gorge myself to the point of sickness. I was always striving to get my peer group and classmate's approval, to the point of accepting abuse even, and never being able to do so. It seemed that other people's opinions of me were more important than my own. I'd also be subject to panic and paranoia attacks, felt everybody was keeping a scorecard on my behavior, and often expressed openly a low self esteem and pathetic lack of confidence in myself.
This behavior continued into the 1980s; even though I managed to shed most of my excess weight by high school, I was still a very persona non grata person within my peer group. I had formed a lot of self defeating behavior patterns, seemed hijacked into repeating them despite evidence they were worsening my social situation, and made countless rationalizations to myself to not take action into improving my situation. I would toggle between these two opposite concerns; fear of rejection, and fear of being smothered. I used to have "friends" that would chase me down and basically take over management of my social life, whether I wanted them to or not, and I'd do my best to passively hide from them whenever possible. Little did I know then, this encouraged them to pursue me more because little other is more empowering that to have a mule to walk around and force your mentorship on at your disposal. It seemed impossible for me to say NO and WHO CARES at this time. I cared about everything; except ridding myself of parasites. Basically I put everyone's head above my own, both male and female, and most of all, never learned how to make friends with the person that mattered most: MYSELF. Everybody else seemed to be doing better, so I assumed they WERE better, and that's where all the supplication behavior started.
February 12, 1987...
Why was this an important day? I was 21 years old then. I came home from work on the second shift from a government contractor, a year out of tech school, to find about 13 police cars in front of the house. Apparently Mother Dearest nonchalantly grabbed a 12 inch butcher knife out of a kitchen cabinet drawer, stabbed my father 14 times while he lay sleeping, and then called the cops on herself. Then she expected them and me and my brothers to feel sorry for her because she couldn't control her impulses. They took that piece of trash away in handcuffs...
At the funeral, everybody who knew my dad said he was a saint; enduring all her second class behavior and all. Obviously my mom didn't see him that way - he was the guy who'd drown in a drop of water; for all his wishing for their environment to be safe and trouble free, all she saw was someone putting out fires and tending to crises. I didn't understand why this happened for another 17 years, then when I read David DeAngelo's eBook and bought his Advanced Series did I know the truth:
My father was KILLED for being an uninteresting, unattractive, provider guy who some woman would just keep around to support her while she fooled around with Bad Boy... by the object of his desire. She actually grew to hate him for sacrificing his own needs and integrity for her.
I moved to Florida in the 1990s, went to work as a concrete press operator in a manufacturing plant after the electronics industry dwindled and made way for the Dot.Com boom, and tried to make my niche there. The job paid a lot more than a bench technician's position, and with PC board troubleshooting becoming obsolete, I tried to make this work. The company I worked for was run like a prison, well compensated but the employees were subjected to a lot of abuse from middle and upper management. I never truly had a flair for the work, had little mechanical ability and even worse supervisory ability, and was always the focal point of a lot of irrational hostility from the plant superintendent who was on a power trip.
In 2000, my self esteem was shot out. I was drinking heavily and began taking tranquillizers like Xanax and Klonopin. It would help with the anxiety and obsessive and highly antagonistic thought loops, but tolerance would set in, and I started having blackouts where I'd take as many as 60 pills a day. I eventually lost my job from being dysfunctional, my apartment and all my possessions. I literally became a bum on the streets, living to eat Xanax just so I could have relief from the anxiety created from the limiting beliefs I was carrying around. I began posing as a doctor and calling in my own prescriptions on the telephone, having got away with burning up as many as 20 Eckerds pharmacies in Broward County with my criminal behavior. I got away with it for awhile since in big cities like Fort Lauderdale the pharmacists are swamped and if the numbers sounded right they didn't bother verifying them. But eventually I got caught and went to jail for 9 months.
It was the best thing that ever happened. Someone there was a computer programmer and suggested I go for my A+ certification.
After I was released, the social worker at the jail had me placed in a program for emotionally disabled and initiated the procedures for Social Security disability benefits. After she heard my issues and my version of what I was suffering from she figured I couldn't support myself and would just overdose on the street. I was 37 years old in September 2003; for all practical purposes my economic viability was gone and was now considered commercially moribund - the Michael Douglas example in Falling Down. I remember my counselor there at New Vistas in Lauderhill was some Carmen Electra lookalike who addressed me in a sing song voice generally reserved for a learning disabled student in an elementary school: "Hi, Chris, how are you today? I'm Sarah, I'm your counselor... !" ...and shook my hand.
Welcome to Mister Roger's Neighborhood, boys and girls! I was like, Aw, no no no, I've got to do better than this... Also, the thought that went thru my head was, "I'll NEVER have a woman like that!"
I decided I wasn't going to languish in the grinding boredom of a pointless existence. This was my Billy Joel experience; those other residents were too disabled to ever subsist on their own. I still had a fighting chance. I used to go to the library on my free time and found some agency online who specialized in finding concrete manufacturers skilled workers like me to operate their machines.
I bounced from shelter to program to halfway house for a bit; many forces in South Florida tried to conscript me into some Turn Cartwheels for Jesus Jim Jones religious cult and transform me into some puritanical myrmidon - like how Jeannie was to Major Nelson (of the TV show I Dream of Jeannie). I saw what they had to offer; I realized I'd rather accept the world the way it was, despite the veneer of glacial indifference. It's that cold but highly coveted sense of anonymity and uninterested tolerance people strive for so much here in this world.
In January 2004, a Louisiana manufacturer picked me up and moved me to where I am at today; 25 miles north of New Orleans.
It wasn't a completely rosy picture. The company didn't see much talent in me as a machine operator, and the other workers were very resentful of my get along and keep the peace attitude and behaviors. My attendance and work ethic kept me with the company but I was eventually moved out of the control room into a lower position.
In October 2004, I received an advertisement for David D's eBook. Just the thought of women and dating made my heart sink. I KNEW it was an area I had to get handled; I just didn't want to experience that pain of rejection because I'd stack them in my mind. I would go thru the litany of all the painful rejections and disappointments since Day One, and come up with the conclusion I was someone that women didn't approve of. But I kept the email stored in my Yahoo account for future reference.
Around Thanksgiving 2004 I had an email LJBF relationship with some Cajun woman in the New Orleans area. I thought she was hot to trot, told her so (BAD!), and she'd go on about this police officer boyfriend she had who was the world to her. I accepted that she wouldn't like me for my criminal history, my negative record underclass, and low level job position. I didn't realize at the time that attraction could cut thru all of that. Somewhere I had the belief in friends first and go from there; more religious bullshit to make one unattractive, pare down their options in life so they could control you more.
I noticed her emails became more frequent, and I felt that twinge of, maybe this is the one (HA! HA!). One day she even asked for my phone number; this was about 10 days before I finally bought David D's eBook. She talked to me for about 5 minutes, I didn't want to get my hopes up and kept things positive. Half hour after I got her phone call, a call came in from an officer from the Louisiana Fraternal Order of Police in Alexandria soliciting donations. Hmmmmm, I wonder what's going on here!
I didn't think about it at the time, but I knew things had to change. I got on David DeAngelo's newsletter, made plans to buy his book and Advanced Series. In the newsletters I saw what I was doing wrong. I realized this woman just stroked my ego so she could get my number to impress this boyfriend of hers. Actually I just think it was some guy who came around to pin her legs behind her ears when he was feeling horny - otherwise why would she be wasting her time with me? In the Advanced Series, David D. said, "I give you permission to BURN any relationship with anyone. It isn't that important."
So it was done. And I haven't given my power away to another woman since. I burned my ships and am proud of it. I also have done this with the concrete agency in Michigan who got me the Louisiana job. He farmed me out work in Arizona back in March 2006, I moved there for a better position, and after 5 weeks they saw I didn't have the skills either. So I moved back to Louisiana and got my old job back and am now studying to be a computer technician. Meanwhile the forklift job is keeping the bills paid. What good came out of Arizona was I sold myself well on the interview (if you can't market yourself you won't be able to sell $100 bills for 50 cents!), went for the opportunity, saw another part of the country, and most importantly, when things started to sour, refused to accept second class treatment from others and took action in coming back to my old job. Also I found I am great on the initial approach. Women WANT to be approached... and all these paranoid delusions of some knock down drag out fight with some AMOG and getting arrested was just an excuse to not take action - to not feel the anxiety of approach. That really cheered me up and helped with the week I was in Phoenix out of work awaiting for my flight to New Orleans. It made my day to be able to make some woman's day by engaging in playful banter.
So that is where I am at today. All this useless therapy with doctors and medication only gave me an inferiority complex and an addiction to tranquillizers. Their take is depression isn't a choice and you have to accept a small lot in life. Of course they won't TELL you this but that is the insinuation because they don't know themselves. The motivation to doing the work David D. outlined is that attraction cuts thru everything; she's not going to care if I'm not making a lot of money, or am a convicted felon, or a whole host of other things. That was the positive reinforcement to finally end this depression and climb out of wussiness.
So cheers to you guys! Looking forward to new products in the future! You people have covered every issue I ever had and have stripped away all the excuses. now I know I don't have to have Chippendale model looks or bank accounts of money to attract hot women, and most of all no longer have to go thru life feeling like less than a man.
No woman is out of my league now!
I would like to add when I started putting David D's material to work, not just to women but people at work, I had the reputation of being the kind of person people could just kick in the ass and like it so I had to learn how to assert myself and not react to others' negative opinions and challenges anymore. Every job I had I used to have a wolf pack of people turning me into a circus animal because I was completely ignorant on how to tactfully deal with a difficult situation. Often I would just nod and say "Un-huh" like an automaton, being falsely agreeable, even when it was obvious I was actively being disrespected. I came off and was viewed disparagingly like Rupert The Monkey Boy in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.
About 3 weeks after purchasing the Advanced Series and applying more Alpha traits the safety marshal called me into his office and told me that everyone said I was losing it and he'd have to report me to corporate as a safety hazard because of my disturbed body language and behaviors I used to put out and recommended I be discharged for mental instability. I stood my ground because I realized that caving into other people's demands to keep what table scraps were coming in was NOT the way to live my life anymore, AND if I developed the attitude of living in my own reality I wouldn't have to worry about not being able to support myself anymore and being unceremoniously deposited on the rubbish heap. The PERMANENCE of my situation in South Florida was only an attitude; I proved it was only temporary. If Hondurans can come to this country with nothing and build themselves up so could I, and I have US naturalization. Also, why it bothered me so much when others would insinuate I was mentally unstable is because I BELIEVED I was unstable. Other people's aspersions are like voodoo. They only affect you if you believe in the superstition.
The plant manger actually sided with me because he saw I was willing to take a stand for myself and no longer allow myself to be walked around like a mule. That was another big AHAH! for me. When I initially tried to take a stand there was a large push to keep me subjugated into remaining a low beta dog everybody could have fun with and alleviate themselves of boredom and frustration. Society is like an octopus; either get swallowed up by it or fight back and win its respect.
After that, many people had a new-found respect for me at that concrete plant. I found that by asserting my power right away it eliminates a lot of these problems in the first place. All my life I thought my power came from others; from being accepted.
Now that same safety marshal is very supportive, actually was instrumental in getting my position back here in Louisiana after I decided to leave that manufacturer in Arizona. Now I can be around other people and feel confident, not like a drug mule in an airport with 2 kilos of cocaine duct taped to my back under my shirt, meanwhile witnessing US Customs and TSA shaking down everyone and tearing thru people's luggage.
There's no mercy to those who choose to bring a knife to a gunfight... if you want peace you have to be willing to go to war.
Those who sacrifice freedom for safety are deprived both freedom and safety...

Perfectly Imperfect
Today I am going to let you in on something you may have already suspected is true, but perhaps have not yet been able to quite figure out completely. As such, this conversation is one I cannot wait to have with you, because it carries with it the possibility for tremendous personal freedom and empowerment.
A while back, I wrote about how the media in this country has a lot to do with programming us with pre-packaged ideas about what we are "supposed" to be attracted to. I believe there are a lot of men and women out there who are going to great lengths to approach a certain level of "beauty" that is, for the most part, a constant chasing after the wind. Write me and I'll send you the complete article, but that’s the basic premise.
That article was written shortly after I happened upon "The Bachelor" as I was flipping channels one night. The eponymous subject was apparently to decide between four women, all of whom were completely different from each other. What a heart-wrenching challenge for him, according to the plot. Well, I looked at the TV and as my eyes started to glaze over (losing interest) it dawned on me…I was personally feeling virtually zero attraction for any of the four women he had before him.
Don't get me wrong. It’s not anyone’s fault that this is the case. Everyone involved with the show was "beautiful"by media standards. But I'm just different. "Beautiful" is not necessarily synonymous with "sexy", and none of these four women did it for me.
And this got me to thinking.
If I really consider the type of woman I would be most attracted to, she would never really be the "Barbie" type, approaching media-driven perfection physically…ever.
Let me spell this out: Put "Barbie" next to a woman who somehow appears to be more of a match for me, and I will be feeling more natural, visceral sexual energy for the one who seems like she belongs with me than for the Super Model type.
So who is this chick?
Some call her the "Girl Next Door", and she’s the type I'm targeting. Better yet, I'm going to tell you why. The general idea is that it’s precisely the fact that she is NOT so "perfect" that makes her more attractive to me. The "imperfections" themselves may not be so easily defined. In fact, I'm hard pressed to come up with a laundry list, because it would be different for me than it would be for you. But basically, such a woman brings a ‘total package’ that I can flat-out appreciate.
Maybe the "imperfections" are exactly those I can relate to. Whatever the case, what makes her potentially "imperfect" for others is what makes her who she is in my eyes, and I would never want to change her to be more "perfect" in the media-driven perspective. In every case, though, she’s the type of woman who others will invariable say "looks good with me". We just look like and act like we belong together.
This is a magical thing. When I know this is going on, I am proud to be with her and to be seen with her even if some other guy may not see in her what I see. In situations like these, when things are firing on all cylinders, we both understand how what’s perfect and what’s IMPERFECT work together to make us get along so well. Interestingly, that’s also when total strangers tend to make positive comments about how "lucky" we are to have "something special"…which has actually happened on first dates before.
It has been said that people often end up together who physically look alike. If you have ever seen a couple and aren't really sure if they are brother/sister or on a date, you know exactly what I'm getting at. I think this is absolutely a truism. I have a friend who is physically very different than I am, and the women he tends to go nuts over I wouldn't ask out in a million years! But see, what I think is irrelevant. If he is with someone who he really digs, then that is all that matters. And it’s particularly interesting how he gravitates towards women who kind of look like him.
Unfortunately, however, many of us want approval from others when it comes to who we are dating. We want to be seen with the one whom everyone else finds attractive. The irony here is twofold. First, we are well aware of how counterproductive it is to try to impress a woman rather than not caring what she thinks. Yet, how is it we still care what our buddies or the rest of the world thinks? Second, everyone else’s perspective is virtually impossible to really measure for sure anyway, and attempting to do so quickly becomes wasted energy.
Want a quick test as to whether you are vulnerable to this way of thinking? OK…I can do that. Here it is: Have you ever found yourself dating someone who many of your friends think is utterly fantastic, when you yourself have this nagging feeling that you are not appreciating her as much as someone else would? I certainly have in the past. It’s as if I am just straight up feeling like I am dating someone else’s woman. It’s easy to get somewhat confused in these cases because the feeling on the surface is, "What is wrong with me? How come I am not satisfied with this person?" Well, that’s a case of being caught up in seeking someone else’s "perfection" rather than "imperfect perfection".
Get it?
Just in case, here’s a "bonus" scenario. Have you ever been out with a woman who you find very sexy, but you just aren't so sure your friends think she’s attractive at all? Perhaps your insecurity gets the best of you and you dump her, only to find out days later that she’s now dating one of your friends!
Although the examples I've given appear to reflect opposite situations, they really address the same issue tied to getting your inner-game together. Know who you are and who you are attracted to, and achieve greater fulfillment in your relationships with women by targeting those who best fit YOUR definition of a "ten", not someone else’s.
Nobody is perfect of course, but focusing on someone who is perfect for me is about as good as it gets.

New Dating/Seduction Seminars & Workshop in Montreal by DOC!
Doc, who many of you know from his great interview here last time and all too rare but outstanding posts on this list, on Mystery's Lounge, and the Montreal Lair, is bringing his seminars and speed dating events to Montreal. Previously they were mainly held in Toronto as part of the Learning Annex, Doc is now setting it up here and plans to hold events on a monthly basis.

The events are Dating Secrets for Women, a 3 Hour seminar (cost $50) and Dating Secrets for Guys; a Guide to The Art of Dating (also 3 hours and $50). The fall calendar has a full weekend seminar and makeover. He also has 3 new books coming out this fall under the SETNA Dating Manual Series. Volume I (to be released this week) deals with the psychology of attraction, first impressions, and working on your inner game, Volume II (coming in September) deals with tactics and strategies to go from meeting her to dating her, and Volume III will deal with Managing Relationships.
Full-weekend Dating Makeover workshops will be offered soon (including a half day with a personal stylist, video tape analysis of body language, and live practice sessions with dating coaches beautiful women who will give the guys on the spot feedback on how they come across and what to improve). If you are opening groups (or sets: 2-sets, 3-sets, mixed sets, etc) of people with the 3 second rule by stacking indirect openers (including false opinion openers), false time constraining (discovered by Style), demonstrating a higher value to your romantic interest’s peer group with high octane DHVs while she obliquely observes (locking her into her own set with a prop), and simultaneously performing false disqualifiers (which include negs) on her with the intension of disarming her peergroup and then isolating her to rebuild her self-esteem once you have enough IOIs (indicators of interest) so you may share in a comfort and trust building effort and then build in a jealousy subplot to solidify her attraction for you, you are using The Mystery Method.
If instead you are only approaching women who are alone, you are greatly limiting your options and quite likely alienating your target's friends. Do you want a lonely woman (why is she lonely?) or a woman who already has a healthy social lfe? Truth is, healthy women have healthy relationships ... sometimes good friendships with guys. Like it or not, you will have to meet these women with men in her group.
