Why You Should Go Backpacking Around Australia, Europe, or Southeast Asia
A few years ago I spent about a year backpacking around Australia. Now to anyone who's done it, 'backpacking' is a euphemism for 'staying at one hostel after another on a well-worn tourist path and partying a lot with other foreigners. If I had gone to Europe or South East Asia I probably would have had a similar time. North America can be fun too, but I've heard the hostel system isn't as built up over here. It wasn't the most rugged or original travel experience but it was a blast.
I went after I had finished university. My goal was mainly to have a fun year away from reality, go to a country I always wanted to visit, and party a lot. By the time I was done with college I was in better shape socially than I was at the end of high-school but my people skills were still below par in a lot of ways. By the time I got home they were much better. Not a bad bonus for something I would have done anyways.
Obviously traveling is very fun. Everyone knows it broadens your horizons and makes you a better person. If you're young and not tied down with responsibilities you should go for just those reasons. But besides from that, here are some reasons to go in keeping with the theme of this site:
Backpacking is an extremely social experience. It's pretty hard for it not to boost your social skills
Upon arriving in a new city you can go around and see most of the touristy sights after a few days. In a small town you can see everything in an afternoon. Seeing a bunch of buildings, exhibits, or scenery gets old surprisingly quickly and rings hollow if you do it alone. You soon realize that most of the fun comes from the people you meet and the experiences you have with them.
Backpackers stay in hostels. Hostels are full of other travelers. Everyone is a stranger and is eager to meet new people. It's really easy to make friends and meet people to hang around with. If you don't try and meet anyone you get bored and lonely very quickly. Once you've made some friends you get to hang around them until you or they move on to the next place. Sometimes this is a few days, sometimes it's few weeks. Sometimes you travel with them for a while. Your relationships with people tend to be shorter but more intense compared to back home. Once you arrive at the next place the process starts over again.
You'll meet a ton of people, mostly at your hostel. You'll meet them in your shared room. You'll meet them in the T.V. room. You'll meet them by the pool. You'll meet them in the kitchen. I'll generalize and say that the people who go backpacking tend to be more fun, interesting, and outgoing then your average person... or maybe the circumstances just bring those traits out of everyone. You run into the odd weirdo but mostly everyone you meet is pretty cool and worth knowing.
So where does this all lead for someone whose people skills could use some improvement? Well...
-You're put into a situation where you're pretty much forced to be outgoing and meet new people (but it's easy to do so).
-You get practice in talking to lots of people.
-You get to meet people from lots of different countries.
-You get practice in making friends.
-You get practice in hanging around people one-on-one and in groups.
-You get to meet a ton of chicks and talk to them too.
-The people you meet are all pretty cool and you're bound to pick up some good traits from them.
-You learn to do all this quickly.
-You're just spending tons of time around people, period. Tips for meeting people while you're backpacking
The magic conversation starting sentence is "Where are you from?".
To get a group of people together to go out with the magic sentence is "We're going to ____, want to come?".
If you have nothing to do the phrase to say is "You guys are going to _____? Mind if I come along?" Some other things to say are:
"How long have you been in ____?"
"Where were you before you came here?"
"Have you been to ____ yet?"
Also, you're going to hear the same questions and comments about your country over and over so it helps to have some interesting/witty things to say when the topic comes up.
Traveling makes you a cooler, more interesting person
First, just the fact that you've gone traveling adds a little something to the way people see you. When I got home from Australia I knew it was impressive on some level but honestly didn't think it was that big a deal. It's a pretty standard trip for younger people to go on where I come from. But when I started talking to people when I got back they were often more impressed than I thought they would be. Many people haven't been traveling so the fact that you've been able to do it earns you respect in their eyes. People are also really curious if you've gone somewhere they've always wanted to go.
You also come back with many legitimately interesting stories, experiences, and little tidbits of information. You're a different person from when you left. Your conversations are naturally more engaging. You have more to say and you look at things a little differently, and so on and so on.
You can overdo it of course. You don't want to be that guy who starts every sentence with "When I was in..." or who still talks about the trip he took five years after it happened.
Depending on where you go there are certain things you have to do just for the points they'll get you back home. If you go to Australia you must learn to surf. When I got home a few times I'd be chatting to a girl and I'd mention that I just got back from Australia. You could see the wheels turning for a second before their eyes lit up and they asked "Oooh! Did you surf?!?" I wish I had. I'm not sure what the equivalent experiences are for other places. I'd say if you go to Europe you should probably swing by Amsterdam. I know I'd want to hear some stories about it. Go a full moon party if you go to Thailand.
Along with university, backpacking is the best way to easily meet chicks
You're in a place where everyone is young, wants to have fun, doesn't know anyone, is partying a lot, is surrounded by exotic strangers, and won't see most of the people they're with after a few days. Golly, can you imagine that lots of people are hooking up?
Yep, you're bound to get laid sooner or later if you go backpacking. I won't exaggerate and say you're going to get some every night, but if you already have some experience picking up chicks at bars or at parties you'll do fine. If you don't then you probably won't get laid right away but it's a great place to get up to speed. You'll meet so many girls that you'll eventually get it right at some point. The best bets are towns where people come to solely party. Things aren't as good in the big cities when people are mainly there to work and refill the bank account.
Certain countries are also known for being easy places to hook up with the
locals. Any guy who's taught English in Japan can tell you that.
I'll say it again, the best reason to go traveling is because it's really fun. One week in another city getting in adventures with fellow travelers is about equal to a month in the real world. There are all kinds of other reasons to go that I haven't even touched on. The boost you could get in your social skills is just a happy side-effect.

I can't tell you 100% that this is the case, but if you want my opinion here's the scoop:
She won't kiss you because she has a boyfriend, but she'll probably have sex with you as long as you don't try and
kiss her. I know this makes no sense at all, but a lot of chicks think this way. It's sort of the Bill Clinton
method, "as long as I didn't do X, it doesn't count." I've had a lot of chicks naked in bed who will do everything as
long as I didn't x, y or z them . I finally found out that the reason was because if they didn't do one thing in particular, everything else was ok.
This is a great opportunity for you - let her know you really like her but you aren't in relationship mode right now and if
she wants to see other guys, you're cool with that (don't tell he you are seeing other chicks, always put it on her. If she
says that she doesn't see other guys and doesn't want you to see other girls, tell her it's way too soon to make such
commitments but if she plays her cards right, who knows?).

My girlfriend and I decided to stop by for a drink at a strip club. And, this smoking hot girl (stripper) started giving me FAKE indicators of interest… you know, trying to tool me and get me to buy a lap dance I suppose...
You'd think that going to a strip club with a hot girl would get you a little respect, but no, these strippers are here to make money, the bottom line. Real sincerity is hard to come by in a win/lose world.
Actually I've found that they sometimes treat you WORSE if you show up with your girlfriend - I guess they figure I'm forcing her to go to strip clubs. But, when I show up with 2-3 girls, all of them holding onto me, kissing me, makeouts, etc. the strippers are quite nice to me.
Anyway, where was I... the hot little stripper was shooting fake IOI's, and it was really too much. I can't stand it when people try to tool me. I do this stuff, and I say this stuff in the same way one would tell a person that their shoes are untied - I say it totally NEUTRAL. She sat there, half speechless, and occasionally busting out laughing like a little schoolgirl. She really thought that was something.
The rest of the night she was all over me, and get this: she dropped all the head games. She became NICE. Sincere. Genuine. Vulnerable.
She was all touchy-feely, etc. so I said, "I appreciate the kindnesses, and I'm flattered, but seriously to get close to me you have to go though my girlfriend FIRST. She is the gatekeeper to my heart. If you really want to get to know her, I suggest that you start with a washcloth."

I felt that some drama might go down, due to my getting too much attention at this point, and some dirty looks from bouncers, so I got up, looked at my girlfriend and said, "Shall we?" and stuck my arm out, gesturing for us to leave for the next bar. We walked out as the stripper and all her stripper friends waved us goodbye and begged for us to return.
I'm sooooo sick of girls who think that being pretty is a licence to be a beeyach (can't swear on Cliff's List.. you people with spam filters, does swearing really bother you? Wow. Talk about uptight!).
Ahh silly rude manipulative lying girls... I'm so tired of it, and this is my revenge. I have more fun putting girls in their place than I ever did being a "PUA". Speaking my truth is FUN. Revenge is fun...
Sometimes we get girls home with us - you can get most girls to come home with you, as long as you get your cute giggly girlfriend to do your "dirty work" for you... Girls are master closers.
So anyway, sometimes when we threesome, "girls will be girls" and they are generally pretty rude people. It is quite rare to meet a pretty girl who isn't somewhat rude to men, and sometimes I just don't have the patience or desire to rummage through all the yin-testing phases.
I'm used to being treated with a certain level of respect, and I also am a firm believer that yin-testing is NOT necessary. To me, you women need to learn a little something called Trusting Your Intuition. But, I'm sooo sick of babysitting and training girls to behave like women that I like to teach them lessons... I make them WATCH and beg to jump in, but I don't let them. I let them feel rejected for a change, let HER feel like the lonely beggar for sex for the first time in her life and let her learn a little something called respect.
I am sooo sick of these spoiled brats, I don't know about you guys but I need more than a pretty face to impress me. I have more fun doing this kind of stuff than having actual threesomes anyway! Once you have a couple hundred threesomes, live with multiple girls, etc. they become no big deal so you do what you can to entertain yourself. Teaching women to be nice is my new hobby now.
I realize how cynical this probably sounds, but if you go and talk to 5000 college-age girls you realize just how insecure and retarded they are. And, we dug our own graves, gentlemen! New Dating/Seduction Seminars & Workshop in Montreal by DOC!
Doc, who many of you know from his great interview here last time and all too rare but outstanding posts on this list, on Mystery's Lounge, and the Montreal Lair, is bringing his seminars and speed dating events to Montreal. Previously they were mainly held in Toronto as part of the Learning Annex, Doc is now setting it up here and plans to hold events on a monthly basis.

The events are Dating Secrets for Women, a 3 Hour seminar (cost $50) and Dating Secrets for Guys; a Guide to The Art of Dating (also 3 hours and $50). The fall calendar has a full weekend seminar and makeover. He also has 3 new books coming out this fall under the SETNA Dating Manual Series. Volume I (to be released this week) deals with the psychology of attraction, first impressions, and working on your inner game, Volume II (coming in September) deals with tactics and strategies to go from meeting her to dating her, and Volume III will deal with Managing Relationships.
Full-weekend Dating Makeover workshops will be offered soon (including a half day with a personal stylist, video tape analysis of body language, and live practice sessions with dating coaches beautiful women who will give the guys on the spot feedback on how they come across and what to improve). If you are opening groups (or sets: 2-sets, 3-sets, mixed sets, etc) of people with the 3 second rule by stacking indirect openers (including false opinion openers), false time constraining (discovered by Style), demonstrating a higher value to your romantic interest’s peer group with high octane DHVs while she obliquely observes (locking her into her own set with a prop), and simultaneously performing false disqualifiers (which include negs) on her with the intension of disarming her peergroup and then isolating her to rebuild her self-esteem once you have enough IOIs (indicators of interest) so you may share in a comfort and trust building effort and then build in a jealousy subplot to solidify her attraction for you, you are using The Mystery Method.
